It was the cover that first drew me into this book and I placed a hold on it without knowing much about it.

This book follows three sisters, Avery, Bonnie and Lucky, in the wake of the death of their fourth sister Nicky. They’ve all learned to cope with Nicky’s death in a unique way: Avery through secretly smoking and stealing, Lucky through drug and alcohol benders and Bonnie, by running away from her passion of boxing. But when their parent’s suddenly decide to sell Nicky’s old apartment, the 3 women are forced to come together to move forward. This book takes a deep look at grief, trauma and what it means to be Inextricably tied together by the bonds of sisterhood.

I don’t read a ton of contemporary family drama stories but this one was decently enjoyable. The writing was solid and I appreciated that the book switching between Avery, Bonnie and Lucky’s perspectives because it kept the story moving at a good pace and it allowed me to take a break from each of the characters just as I would get frustrated or bored of them. I admit, the only chapters I really enjoyed were Bonnie’s because I found Avery and Lucky to be very grating and I did not enjoy them very much as characters.

That said, I appreciate Mellor’s ability to craft such distinct, flawed characters. Each of the women felt real and I recognize that while I may not have liked them by the choices they made or the words that they said, they each displayed undeniable qualities that make us all imperfectly human.

Overall I did like this book and would recommend this to anyone that is interested in a contemporary family drama that unapologetically emphasizes flawed characters as they navigate grief, their own demons, and the bond that they share as sisters.
