Bits of fall are starting to make their appearance - the weather is sporadically cooling and the leaves have started to change color and fall - so this felt like the perfect time to start diving into some creepy books. I’ve never read any of Catriona Ward’s other novels but this one immediately grabbed my attention.
Wilder Harlow is a lonely teen on vacation with his family at his recently deceased uncle’s coastal home. There he meets Nathaniel and Harper and quickly forms an unshakable friendship with them. However, Whistler Bay is plagued by a serial killer, a person called the Dagger man - known for leaving polaroids of his victims around the area. Years after those fateful summers, Wilder finally find himself ready to sit down and write his story of what happened to him and his friends all those years ago.
I really enjoyed this book. I hesitate to go too much into detail because this is one of those books that you’re better off going into knowing as little as possible. Truly, it is a wild ride so I will leave you with only these few tidbits: First, the atmosphere is incredible - Ward has somehow managed make even the dead of summer (ha) feel bone chilling. And second, this is the first book (in a really long time) that constantly kept me on my toes. It’s a spectacularly wild and creepy ride that I highly recommend picking up this fall.
