This book was such an unexpected delight and it kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last pages. You know the kind of book where you find yourself sneaking pages every possible second? The one you stay up way too late reading because just one more chapter? This was it for me.
This book follows Margaret, who has finally found her dream house and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to make her leave. So what if it’s a little haunted? Nothing that Margaret can’t get used to. Not so much for her husband, Hal, who couldn’t take it anymore and left. But when her daughter shows up, concerned that her father is no longer returning her calls, Margaret is desperate to protect her daughter from the house’s ghosts.
This book was unexpectedly funny, so much so that I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout. Margaret is such an unusual, likable character and her relationship with the house puts a fun spin on the usual horror tropes. This book was both predictable and unexpected and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of reading it - something I cannot say for many books. The pacing is excellent and Orlando does an amazing job of balancing horror/hard-hitting situations with comedy. Highly recommend to anyone that wants to dip their toes into horror.
