I’ve been feeling a little burned out and wanted to read a novella so who better to turn to than the reigning Queen of creepy fantasy novellas: T. Kingfisher?
This book is a loose continuation of What Moves the Dead (though it reads perfectly fine as a standalone as well). It follows Alex Easton, a non-binary soldier after their harrowing experience at Usher Manor. Alex is back in their old stomping grounds, on the way to their family home with Angus to prepare to host Ms. Potter, a mycologist that also appeared in the first novella. But when they arrive, the family home is seemingly abandoned and the caretaker missing.
It’s not long after Alex’s guests arrive that even more sinister things start appearing, leading Alex to realize what happened to their missing caretaker may not have been as innocent as first assumed.
This book was short and chilling, I ended up reading it in one sitting and enjoyed every second! The chilling atmosphere continues in this story, with creepy folklore and wonderful characters. I don’t want to say too much - since the book is short, any extra divulgence would stray into spoilers. Basically, if you enjoyed the first book in this series, I think you will enjoy this one as well. I sincerely hope this becomes a longer series!
