I was in the mood to continue with mysteries, so when this hold became available at the library, I was excited to pick it up. While a solid book, I found this to be a pretty mediocre mystery novel.
This book follows several characters, many years after the terrifying disappearance of a young boy. The case has long gone cold when a man stumbles across Davy’s jacket in an un-searched building near where he went missing. The unexpected find reopens the case with new vigor as we watch the events unfold through the eyes of several characters: Thaddeus, Davy’s older brother, who was in same field the night he went missing. Tabitha, Davy’s mother. Anissa, the public information officer for the town’s police department, and Gordon, the primary suspect in Davy’s disappearance.
Overall it was a good story. I enjoyed the perspectives of each of the characters, which kept the plot steadily moving forward. I also enjoyed the flashbacks, so that we could see the events of the original night unfold as more information came to light in the “present” timeline.
Unfortunately there’s nothing particularly remarkable or clever about the mystery that makes it stand out from other mystery novels. This book focuses more on relationships and character development than the mystery itself. It’s also not the type of mystery that the reader will easily solve, something that I generally dislike in books like these (I want a chance to solve what happens!). There was also some withholding-information-from-the-reader moments used to build up suspense but when they finally were revealed, they didn’t make any sense - something which I found frustrating.
If you enjoy mysteries or relationship-centric stories, I think this is a solid book - just don’t expect anything revolutionary or out of the ordinary.
