Around this time last year I had the immense pleasure of reading Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice, with only a single complaint: I wanted more. I loved the characters and grew so attached to them that the ambiguous ending stuck with me for days and left me wondering what would happen to them next.
If you’re not familiar, Moon of the Crusted Snow is a brilliant, indigenous take on the dystopian end-of-the-world trope. This book picks up 12 years after the ending of that novel and follows some familiar characters (who I won’t name because, of course, spoilers). Though things have settled down, the tribe now faces food shortages and so they make the difficult decision to send an investigative party out in to the world to find a new place for them to move to.
Just like the first novel, this book is beautiful, harrowing, and atmospheric - an amazing second installment that gave me the closure I so badly wanted from the first book. If you like dystopian-type novels, I cannot recommend these two books enough and I eagerly await for Waubgeshig’s next book, whatever it may be.
