Okay, this is going to sound pretty terrible but I cannot for the life of me remember if this is my first Lucy Foley book. I think there’s another author that I keep mixing up with her and after spending thirty minutes digging through my Goodreads, I’m still not sure. I suppose it doesn’t really matter. Anyway!
This book opens with the ending. A burning mansion on the cliff side. A dead body in the water. So what the heck happened during the grand opening of The Manor? What was supposed to be a glitzy glamping, high-end experience of spa and outdoors turns into murder. And there’s more than one person at the event with secrets hiding in their past.
This book was fine. The characters were interesting enough (I found the antagonist to be particularly fascinating), there were plenty of small twists and turns to keep me engaged as a reader, and the pacing was steady. That said, it’s not what I would consider a thriller. It’s mildly creepy at best. The stakes feel non-existent and the Birds thing was interesting in theory but I was disappointed in how it played out. I think it’s safe to say that I can lump Foley in the same box as Riley Sager. It’s a fun, mild, occasionally goosebumpy mystery that doesn’t require a lot of effort to read - the perfect kind of book for a lazy summer night. It definitely won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I think if you’re the type of person that can read a book without feeling the need to dig too far under the surface, you might like this one.
